Mountain Brook Village has a new neighborhood gathering spot with the arrival of Woody's Food + Bar, opened by longtime Mountain Brook resident and restaurant veteran Jason Parkman. A familiar Birmingham favorite is stepping into a new chapter with the debut of Zozo's Kitchen, the family-owned concept from the Cassimus family, longtime names in the city's restaurant scene, who have reimagined their former Cahaba Heights eatery Marky's Kitchen. Scoop City, the latest concept from Chef Nick Carpenter and the team behind Tuff Love Hospitality, brings a nostalgic ice cream shop experience with a creative twist to Homewood at The Edge.

Homewood, at The Edge and SoHo
Scoop City sits inside The Edge development, giving 18th Street a walkable dessert stop that did not exist in the previous rotation. The shop serves classic scoops and over-the-top sundaes, shakes, floats, and fully loaded banana splits, with flavors ranging from chocolate and vanilla to Blackberry Cobbler, Salted Caramel Brownie, and Banana Pudding. A few blocks north, the Aloft SoHo Square hotel picked up a full-service tenant. Regulars in Homewood have likely noticed the new marquee for Foo Hai in the Aloft Birmingham SoHo Square hotel at 1903 29th Ave S, with Urban Hai representatives confirming the opening for spring 2026.
That corridor now runs coffee to cocktails to ice cream in a five-minute walk, which is a shift for a district that used to empty out after 8 p.m.
Mountain Brook Village
Woody's is the anchor. The laid-back concept focuses on approachable comfort food, cold drinks, and an easygoing atmosphere, with a menu of elevated takes on burgers, sandwiches, quesadillas, and shareable starters. Around the corner, the Village continues to lean into small-boutique tenancy. Luna, at 2721 Cahaba Road, Unit 120, recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, offering women's clothing and accessories with hours from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
One structural change to plan around: the O'Neal Library has temporarily closed for major interior renovations, with limited library services available inside Mountain Brook City Hall at 56 Church St., open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The O'Neal Library is set to reopen in the summer of 2027. If your Saturday used to end at O'Neal, redirect to the Village storefronts through next summer.
Cahaba Heights
Zozo's Kitchen takes over Marky's old footprint. The Cassimus family already had loyal customers walking through that door, and the reopening reads less like a rebrand and more like a menu refresh in a room the regulars already know.
West Homewood, Next In Line
The West Homewood corner is the one to watch through the back half of the year. El Barrio, a celebrated Birmingham eatery known for a fusion of traditional Mexican flavors with Southern flair, is coming to West Homewood, with the same menu and ambiance as its existing location. Paramount, the Birmingham spot known for retro arcade games and classic American comfort food, is also set to open in West Homewood, bringing the same atmosphere and menu. Both are Birmingham names expanding a second time inside city limits rather than jumping to Hoover or 280, which tells you where they see foot traffic going.

The August And Fall Calendar That Actually Matters
Restaurant news is only half of a summer weeknight. The other half is what your city government and your neighbors are putting on the calendar. A few dates worth putting on the fridge:
The Homewood summer closes the way it always does, with the Fourth of July festival still fresh in memory as the tentpole. Homewood celebrated both America's 250th birthday and the city's 100th anniversary during its annual Fourth of July festival, with the free event beginning at 5 p.m. in downtown Homewood featuring rides, inflatables and entertainment, and two blocks of 18th Street South plus one block of 29th Avenue South closed to vehicle traffic. Activities concluded at 9 p.m. as the annual Thunder on the Mountain fireworks display began, with downtown Homewood widely considered one of the premier viewing locations for Vulcan Park's fireworks. The centennial framing carries through the year, so expect the fall Witches Ride and holiday parade to lean into it too.
In Vestavia, the June rhythm sets the template for what returns in late summer. The Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest ran an interactive class with Foxhound Bee Company teaching tweens about beekeeping, with registration through the children's desk at 205-978-0158. I Love America Night returned to the aquatic complex with free swimming, sponsor booths, games, arts and crafts, live entertainment and a fireworks display, free and open to the public. The Farmers Market at Scout Square continues on its Wednesday cadence through the growing season. The Vestavia Hills Farmers Market, brought by Vestavia Hills Methodist Church, features local businesses, farmers' produce, artists, and musicians.
Mountain Brook business-side additions to notice on your walking route: Planet Fitness at 4500 Montevallo Road in Crestline is running its annual high school summer pass program allowing teens ages 14 to 19 to work out free through Aug. 31, with strength equipment, cardio machines, stretching areas and trainer access. That is a small thing, but it changes the shape of a household August if you have a rising freshman at home.
If You Only Have One Weeknight
Pick one of the three that fits the mood. Ice cream and a walk at The Edge, a low-key burger and beer on the Woody's patio in the Village, or a family table at Zozo's while the reopening is still fresh enough to feel like an event. All three are within a fifteen-minute drive of each other, and all three are run by people who already know your neighbors' names.
The larger point: the Over-the-Mountain dining map is thickening in the pockets you already walk. The next twelve months will decide whether the West Homewood corner becomes the fourth true node alongside downtown Homewood, Mountain Brook Village, and Cahaba Heights. Based on which operators are signing leases there, it probably does.
